Moses, Sorley, Malcolm Harris, and many others list, according to Hening's Statutes, a Major William Lewis who assigned to Councilor John Lewis the land called Chemokins.

A man, Wm Lewis is listed as transported w/ John (Jon) Lewis Sr. along with Lida, Edward, and John Jr. 1653.

Who was this William Lewis?  What was his relation to John Sr.

William is his older brother, the oldest born. He would normally have inherited the family holdings, but had a full scholarship to Oxford and was trained as a lawyer, later moving to London. According to the Genuki site, he was one of the three lewises who surrendered Chepstow to Cromwell's forces during the English Civil War (other two were John Sr and jr.). He moved to Va, lived next to his brother, but then moved to Donegal Ireland as part of the Protestant Relocation to Ulster. His family lived there for a while, and then fled here in the form of John Lewis 3rd, whose son Andrew Lewis was one of the original choices for leader of the First Continental Army, later taken instead by George Washington.

They moved to the U.S. and fought in the Revolutionary War, and the Lewis family of John ap Lewis the Gent acknowledged them as family.

Nathaniel Lewis, of NC, has been proven by genetic testing to be William's descendant also, tho I don't have the site for that.

Another descendant is Charles Lewis, who died during the Battle for Point Pleasant against the Indians.

The story of William removing to Ireland sounds alot like some convoluted story of Irish John Lewis who "slew the landlord" fled to America.

"Tradition has it that John Lewis was descended from French Huguenot (or, alternatively, Welsh or English) stock on his paternal side and Ulster Scotch on his maternal side. He was born in Donegal County, Ireland, in 1678.

The reason he left Ireland is engraved on his tombstone: He "slew the Irish Lord." Family tradition, passed on in slightly variant versions, indicate that his landlord, variously identified as Sir Mungo (or Mingo) Campbell or as Lord Clonmithgairn, unjustly and illegally attempted to raise the rents on the leaseholders on his lands, on the premise that the lands would be forfeited if the higher rents were not paid. "

I believe that Andrew Lewis descended from Irish John Lewis.  At any rate, we would need more credible proof of this William Lewis "becoming" John Lewis in order to pursue this theory.

The idea of Gent. John Lewis of Monmouth at the fall of Chepstow originated from a hypothesis of Moses who surmised that the Esq. Lewis written in the Memoirs of the Civil War in Wales 1874. John Roland Phillips was this John Lewis.  The Kemeys of Cefn Mably (1879) J. Rowlands seems to raise some doubts regarding this theory.  I believe we need to investigate this a little more.

I hope that I have correctly posted this query.   I have been able to document my LEWIS line from my grandfather HENRY FITZHUGH LEWIS,
(1865-1952) thru James LEWIS, born 1660 Old Rappahannock County, VA and died 10 May 1729 in Middlesex County, VA.  Now, I am trying to tie JAMES LEWIS to JOHN LEWIS of Warner Hall.  I feel like I am on the right track because I inherited letters written by JOHN LEWIS at Warner Hall in 1732.
Any help you might give me would be greatly appreciated.  As you well know, there are several suggestions for the parentage of James...none of which are documented.  If I can finally prove the parentage, I can give you bios on all of the family to the present day.

Thanks,
Sallie Lewis Hurt

You did post you question correctly.  I am sure you have exhausted Sorley and Pioneer Lewis Families without much luck.  I have found much help from the Lewis surname forum thru Rootsweb:
